The year is 1889 and the world is on the brink of war. After Gilded Crown Prince Rudolf is raised from the dead, 4 unnatural horses are unleashed on Europe, bringing chaos, famine, pestilence and death. Sebastien de Lacey, also known as the Mad Lord of Lasingstoke, has become the Pale Rider, and is making his way inexorably across Europe towards Lonsdale Abbey, a sanitorium north of nowhere.
Writer Ivy Savage and physician Christien de Lacey must use all of their wits and resources to beat the Mad Lord to the Empire of Steam, figure out the riddle of the lockets and prevent what could very well be the end of the world. For what the Mad Lord seeks is the elusive Lostlight, a locket sought by all the empires of the world, and they will stop at nothing, even a World War, to procure it. But in order for Ivy to stop this Apocalypse, she must win the battle for Sebastien’s heart or lose the War of the very World.
