"I would have bought this book for the cover alone. I also want the poster, cell phone case, stationery, queen sized bedding and a black toothbrush covered in gold stars." - West Coast Book Reviews
"GREAT cover art!" - BookWorks Team
"@hdickson62 I really might have to buy one of your books. The concept looks interesting, just the covers alone!” - Twitter reader who saw a cover that converted them into a reader, that converted them into an ardent fan
Book covers usually work on one of two principles: 1) What is at the heart of the story and 2) What sells. I like to combine both.
The process is relatively simple. You pitch an idea of what you're thinking - what the book is about, the genre, the characters, the setting. Is there a key event (a tornado), a key villain (the Evil Empire), a key prop (a magic amulet)? What does the main character look like? Is it a team? What is the turning point? These are the things that will help me find the heart of the story. Buuuuut.... What is the genre? This helps me determine what will sell. All genres have a look, a feel, a style. We need to work within that in order for potential readers to know this book will fall within their expectations. I'm all for busting stereotypes but a 'sweet romance' with a deserted, eerie green street will not sell to romance readers who are looking for a rose, an Adirondack chair, or the hazy profile of an almost kiss.
Better yet is to work within and around the parameters and do something refreshing, original and at the same time, marketable. That's what I like to do. If that sounds like what you want, excellent! Let's git 'er dun!
I'll give you three rough drafts. Since I'm primarily a photoshop artist, they will likely be photoshopped images cut and pasted onto a 12"x 18" or 10"x 16"palette. You trust your instincts - even if you like all of them, there will likely be one that just grabs you and you'll know that's the one. You give me the okay and I'll start to work my magic, digitally painting until it's perfect. Title and name will be tweaked with gorgeous fonts and we'll have a stunning cover perfect for both eBook thumbnail and print.
For print, we'll need spine as well as back cover art/text. I'll need to know what size you were planning in order to drop it into a sized template. That's a bit more work so the cost is a bit higher, but honestly, if you have an eBook, you should have a print version. Some people love print, and it shows the ebook as a perceived 'better deal' than print. Besides, you really want that sucker on your book shelf. You really do.
If you're just testing the waters and not sure what you need, send a falcon, or better yet an email via the contact page. I look forward to working with you!
